Is there a Toyota approved test to determined weather a sludge problem is present on a 1998 to 2003 Sienna van

Sometimes it is as easy as starting the engine and looking for blue smoke. That would be a good indication of a sludge problem. The next thing is removing the front cam cover. Sometimes there is some evidence there but not enough so the back cam cover needs to come off. If you have a sludge problem it can always be verified by removing the back cam cover. Inside either cover if there is sludge it is very obvious. It looks like a thick coating of dark brown gelatin. Further checks are cylinder scoring and cam bearing damage.
