Does having insurance hurt a case for SSI?

Okay I've been trying to get SSI for over 2 years now and I happen to have insurance that my parents pay for seperately and since the cost of insurance has gone up I've considered cancelling it but my parents say that they are holding on to it until I get approved and will be covered by medicaid. In my state, you can't get medicaid simply for being low income, you have to legally declared disabled and on benefits or a mom on welfare. So far I am neither, but I'm concerned that if we went ahead and cancelled the insurance than due to my dependency on my parents I couldn't use income based medical centers. Also I was wondering already having insurance could hurt my chances of getting SSI?
