Would you read a book if it had one of those stories?

I think the main question is really which story you can honestly write. A lot of these are going to take research unless you don't mind flaws or you've been through these things yourself. But really, just because you reacted one way doesn't mean the majority of the population does and that's what you need to aim for, especially with your first book. You want to appeal to the larger audience so it's more likely to be read. Pick a plot line you know well and/or wouldn't mind doing lots of work on. And even if it seems like no publisher is going to take your book or even if you feel like you just can't finish, don't give up hope. Try taking breaks every now and then and come back at the problem with a fresh mind. Good luck!
